Castle Howard, only a short distance from our Malton hotels, now has a major new exhibition open to the public. “Brideshead Restored” stretches over three once-abandoned rooms of the stately home and this unique exhibition explores the new film of Brideshead Revisited that was filmed at Castle Howard last summer.
This one off display shows how the formerly glorious rooms, which were ruined in a fire in 1940, have been utilised as a space for film sets. “Brideshead Restored” gives visitors a fantastic opportunity to look behind the scenes of the film and see the sets close up, including the four-poster bed, which was so central to the climax of the story of Brideshead Revisited.
The exhibition is situated in the High South Rooms and visitors to Castle Howard can walk through the locations before they see the film. On display are amazing pictures from the movie, including stills from the action and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the filming process.
Brideshead Revisited was released in Britain on 3rd October 2008 and has a cast led by Matthew Goode, Ben Whishaw and Hayley Atwell, with Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon also starring in the film.

As well as displaying the stills from the new film, “Brideshead Restored” also tells the story of the 1940 fire and how the filming of the Brideshead production helped restore Castle Howard back to its former glory.
The exhibition also tells the story of the 1981 Granada Television production of Brideshead Revisited, which was filmed at Castle Howard. This production starred Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews and Diana Quick. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to uncover how Evelyn Waugh’s novel came to be filmed at the stately home and compare the old and new versions of Brideshead Revisited.
As a final feature to the exhibition and for the first time visitors to our hotels in Malton will be able to ascend to new heights in Castle Howard. The general public will now have the chance to go up the great staircases at either side of the Great Hall and this enables visitors to view the dramatic architecture of Castle Howard from an entirely new perspective.
There are also amazing views over the gardens of Castle Howard and up into the Dome, with it still showing the effects of the fire damage that was caused in 1940.
