Construction of Skate Park in North Bay to Commence
28th Nov 2008
An article in the Evening News reports hows visitors to Scarborough hotels were pleased to hear how Scarborough Council has given the go-ahead for funding to be released early so the development of a new skate park, near The Clifton Hotel Scarborough, can progress.
Since the beginning of the project, the condition of the castle headland cliff has deteriorated to a point where additional protection works are needed. This work involves creating a bund of boulders along the base of the cliff to act as a barrier between the cliffs and the skate park. It is estimated to cost £25,000.
At a cabinet meeting, tourism and leisure portfolio holder Cllr David Jeffels urged cabinet members to move the recommendations. He said: “It’s moving forward and hopefully it will taken an even bigger step forward if you agree for the £39,000 to be reallocated. It is a scheme that is involved with friends in the area and a scheme with considerable public involvement.”
In a report, parks development officer Tom Mutton said: “Due to the great need for the skate park project, the risk of losing existing funding if the project does not progress and the risk of jeopardising the children’s play area project, it is proposed to use £39,000 of the funding for phases 3 and 4 for phase 2. There are £25,000 contingencies in phase 2 budgets and any of these not spent after the skate park is completed would be transferred to phases 3 and 4.”
Hairy Bob’s Skate Park, near one of our Scarborough hotels is a project to create a new skate and bike park on Scarborough’s North Bay as part of the Royal Albert Park regeneration project.
A new chidren’s play area and family open space will be created on the site of the existing skate park.
Most of the funding for the project has now been secured. A decision on a £60,000 grant from Sport England is expected by the end of the year.
The park will include both a concrete section with bowls and street course, and a dirt jump section with the aim of attracting people from a wide area and to enable competitions to be held there, which will hopefully boost sales for accommodation in Scarborough.
