CELEBRITY SET FOR OPENING OF ‘NEW’ MUSEUM IN SCARBOROUGH
Rotunda, The William Smith Museum of Geology opens this weekend
The Rotunda Museum opens it’s doors this weekend following a two-year transformation costing £4.4 million – with a special celebrity guest enrolled to ‘cut the ribbon’.
Susie Blake, who played Bev Unwin in ITV’s Coronation Street, will officially open the museum on Saturday, starting the weekend of celebration.
The star of one of Britain’s most popular soaps currently performing at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre in 2 plays directed by resident playwright Alan Ayckbourn.
600 local visitors are expected at the ‘new’ attraction on Saturday, which is located just a minutes walk from The Royal Hotel in Scarborough.
To celebrate the re-opening, The Rotunda is throwing a party in the Museum gardens on Saturday and Sunday including musicians, magicians, stilt walkers, dancers and fun things to do for all the family.
Guests staying at The Royal Hotel, and other Hotels in Scarborough, will have to wait until Sunday to join the celebrations however, as entry on Saturday is only available to those who hold a ticket published in the Scarborough Evening News. However, it will be worth the wait, with Scarborough’s Symphony Orchestra and the Yorkshire Coast Morris Dancers joining the festivities on Sunday.
Visitors to the museum – now named ‘Rotunda, The William Smith Museum of Geology’ – will see exhibits including dinosaur footprints, ancient skeletons and fossils alongside more modern installations including interactive video technology. William Smith, after whom the hotel is named, was the creator of the world’s first geological map, and lived in Bar Street, Scarborough between 1835-1839.
For those wishing to find out more about the geology pioneer, Professor Hugh Torrens will be giving a lecture in the Promenade Lounge at the Scarborough Spa Complex from 6pm tomorrow.
